APD officer injured in shootout with barricaded gunman at Four Seasons building

Police have confirmed that the suspect who barricaded himself inside the Four Seasons building in downtown Atlanta is now in custody.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said that one police officer was injured in the incident and at least two police officers fired weapons. The injured officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment but is expected to recover.

Schierbaum says they were called to the residential side of the building just after 10 a.m. for a mental health issue after the man got into a fight with a building employee.

Sources confirmed Tyisha Fernandes from Channel 2 He said a man pulled a gun on someone upstairs in the hotel.

Officers attempted to negotiate with the man, later identified as 70-year-old Jay Stevens Berger, to leave his 33rd-floor home.

When it was learned that other weapons might be found in Verger’s residence, SWAT teams were called to the area and residents on the 32nd, 33rd and 34th floors were evacuated from the building.

Atlanta police said at least three weapons were used during the incident: a handgun, a shotgun and a rifle. At least one of these weapons was thrown onto the balcony.

Most of the shots were fired from the door, but police said some were fired from the balcony, prompting them to issue a shelter-in-place order for the community.

Eventually, police said, Berger waved his hands from his balcony and surrendered to police.

Fernandes and Channel 2’s Candace McCowan both are in the area near the hotel. Both heard a sustained burst of gunfire before Berger was arrested.

Chief Schierbaum said they are working to return evacuated residents to their homes, but there is no time frame because the investigation is still active.
