A woman who was stabbed by her “evil” abusive husband in a knife and gun attack on a Scottish island has said she was “glad the jury saw the true face of his lies”.

While the young people were screaming and asking for help, their fathers ignored their distress and grabbed the newly purchased gun and hundreds of bullets.

Reacting to his conviction and prison sentence at the High Court in Edinburgh, Ms Macdonald said: “I’m glad the jury recognized his life and found him guilty.

“28 years to life imprisonment was as much punishment as we could have asked for. But it will never be enough for the damage it has done.”

The jury was told there were enough gun cartridges in the house to “start a small war”.

MacDonald had been holding a grudge for a decade after apparently losing the fight between the two.

In his final act of brutality, the killer continued his drive to attempt to kill another couple to whom he had filed a complaint.

The court heard he threatened to kill a local osteopath he was obsessed with over claims his life was “ruined”.

He claimed John MacKenzie’s back injury became worse after appointments were made to resolve the problem.

Macdonald shot at him and his wife, Fay. Even today there are bullets stuck in his face.

Sentencing on Friday, Judge Lady Drummond told MacDonald he was guilty of “a series of brutal and mindlessly violent attacks” and that statements from Mr MacKinnon’s family were “heartbreaking to read”.

She said: “The last two years have been unimaginably difficult for them all. They miss and mourn him every day.”
