A 2-year-old western lowland gorilla had a fatal accident at Canada’s Calgary Zoo. The monkey named Eyere died after being hit by the hydraulic door. The incident occurred on November 12 after a staff member accidentally opened the wrong door in an attempt to separate Eyare from other gorillas during a training session. As a result, Eyere suffered a head injury. Although a team of veterinarians attempted to save the young female gorilla with CPR and other related efforts, the primate eventually died.

According to a Nov. 30 press release from the zoo, Eyere was playing with his troop in an area intended for feeding and observation when the accident occurred. One of the gorilla care workers wanted to open a door to separate Eyere for vaccination training, but in the process accidentally operated the wrong door. When another sign was reached, the door closed behind Eyere, causing head injuries. Despite emergency CPR and other medical attention from the veterinary team, Eyare died from his injuries shortly after 9:30 a.m.

Colleen Baird, the Zoo’s animal care manager, described the incident as a “terrible tragedy” and stated that the staff caring for the gorillas was experienced. Following the event, staff have been relieved of animal-related duties and will be reassigned at a later time. Attending further training courses before starting work again.

“The gorilla team took Eyare from the unit and the veterinary team immediately began life-saving measures, including CPR. Unfortunately, Eyare died from his injuries,” said Baird, adding, “It has only been a week. We are still grieving the loss of this young gorilla. We are also continuing to heal through this experience.” and we are committed to learning,” he added.

The zoo stated that some preventive measures will be taken to prevent such incidents and that the organization will organize annual training sessions for the gorilla care team to operate the hydraulic doors.

Baird also said members of the zoo’s construction operations team confirmed that all hydraulic doors in the gorillas’ enclosure were working properly. The zoo stated in its press release that the use of these gates is standard for any accredited zoo.

The Calgary Zoo has faced a similar situation before, and this year alone, a polar bear reportedly died from a “crush injury” to its trachea during a playful fight with another bear.

In 2016, an otter became entangled in an “unauthorized” pair of pants that a zookeeper had mistakenly left in the animal’s habitat, according to CNN. Additionally, Canadian local news station CBC reported that a capybara at the Calgary Zoo was crushed in 2009. next to another hydraulic door.
